THE FOUNDERSā STORY
How it started
Both brothersā martial arts journey began over 20 years ago. Born from a love of superheroes and comic books, Sam was bullied from a young age and enrolled in martial arts to learn to defend himself (and because he wanted to become Batman). Tom was a natural athlete and excelled in every sport he trained ināfrom mountain biking to rugbyāso when he saw Samās interest peak in martial arts, Tom decided to go along with his brother.
Their journey started in karate for a couple of years, before both brothers wanted a more physical style of training and to test themselves competitively. That ultimately led them to start training at Deal Kickboxing over 20 years ago under former champion Andy Hillāa club both brothers were passionately part of for over a decade.
Expanding the craft
A couple of years after starting at Deal Kickboxing, the brothers expanded their knowledge furtherāfirst becoming part of Infinity MMA, one of the South Eastās first MMA gyms (at a time when MMA was still very much in its infancy) under head coach Shane Burr. It was here the brothers met and trained with numerous fightersāmany of whom later opened MMA gyms all around Kent.
They also began training at Betteshanger Thai Boxing under instructor Chris Thomas. The brothers remained part of both these clubs until Betteshanger Thai shut down and Infinity MMA moved to its new home in Maidstone. During these years they travelled for training at gyms around the UK to further their skill set, learning alongside Muay Thai pros and MMA champions.
Resilience
Tragedy struck when Sam was just 17 years oldāa fatal bike crash resulted in a bleed on the brain among many other medical problems. For the next year Tom trained alone while Sam was put under the care of a specialist doctor at Kingās Hospital.
Samās competitive career was overābut Tomās was just starting. Once Sam was well enough to train again, he joined Tom at Big Bear BJJ under one of their old training partners, Bear, from their Infinity MMA days. There they trained a mix of striking, MMA and BJJ. They also started training with Buster Keefe in Doverāa fighter who even fought former UFC heavyweight champion Dan Severn.
Unable to let go of his competitive nature, Sam agreed to have one more fightāagainst everyoneās wishes, including his brother and coaches. Unable to train properly and still carrying a severe brain injury, this fight became not only the only MMA fight he ever lost, but also the only time he was ever stopped in competitive fighting. Sam later suffered a stroke and spent significant time recovering.
Taking it worldwide
Not long after, Tom travelled ThailandāIn this time Tom once again surrounded himself with the best gyms they had to offer from training with 10x muay thai world champion John Wayne Parr at boonchu gym, to multiple time world champion Luis Regis at SRG Thai boxing Tom would continue to fight and remain undefeated on the pro muay thai scene. Before he returned to the uk a number of years later.
Opening Masons
While Tom was away, Sam continued honing his craftātraining with former heavyweight pro MMA champion Dayman Lake at Zilla Training, and building a close bond with Ade Phillips of Savage Muay Thai (a gym the Masons will always refer to as their brothers-in-arms). Sam was working as a personal trainer at Bannatyneās when he decided to walk out one day and open his own gymāsomething he and his brother had always dreamed of. After twisting Tomās arm to help him run it (Tom thought he was crazy for walking out of a stable job), fast forward a few years and here we are⦠Masons Fight, Strength & Fitness.
